Reporter-in-Residence

Nakisanze Segawa is a seasoned journalist and Reporter-in-Residence at Global Press Journal, based in Kampala, Uganda. With a degree in Mass Communications from Muteesa I Royal University, she brings over a decade of experience reporting on health and human rights.

Born in Luweero and raised in Uganda’s capital, Segawa has a deep understanding of the country’s social dynamics. Her impactful reporting includes coverage of discriminatory school policies that forced Black girls to keep their hair short while girls of other races could grow their hair long—a story that provoked outcry on social media and led to a policy change.

Nakisanze’s work often highlights the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda, including the impact of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Law on individuals seeking asylum abroad and the prevalence of HIV in Uganda’s prisons due to the denial of basic prevention tools.

In addition to her reporting, Segawa is also a Luganda performance poet and fiction writer, with her short stories appearing in Femrite Publications. Her multifaceted storytelling approach amplifies the experiences of local people and fosters a deeper understanding of Uganda’s complex social issues.
